WAIKAKA HEREFORDS
Waikaka Station has been home to Waikaka Herefords since 1954. We operate a closed herd and are intent Waikaka Genetics’ annual on farm Bull Sale is a highlight on farm calendar and each year we put 25 to 30 strong rising 2 year old Hereford bulls up for auction, the majority of these being Polled Herefords. The purchase of Monymusk Eiffel Tower in 2011 was a game changer for us, and with the addition of Otapawa Red Wolf and Waikaka Hustler to the herd, this years Polled Bulls are our strongest line up yet. A decade ago we made the conscious shift towards a Polled Hereford herd and we are excited about the results we are seeing coming through from the polled Genetics we have introduced, particularly in the Eiffel Tower and Red Wolf cross. Beautiful Dams have been produced from these crosses also which means a strong polled herd base to take us into the future as we continue to add in strong new polled sires. The change was never going to be a quick game and we have been particular with our breeding selections, always keeping the big picture in sight. This year the Sale Bulls look to be top performers with outstanding figures across the board, fantastic temperament and strong constitution. They are growing nicely and are ready to head to new homes come May. The auction, held in conjunction with PGG Wrightson and Carrfields, is traditionally held undercover in our selling shed but Covid 19 restrictions may see it being held outside this year with an accompanying online auction, or the possibility that if we are unable to proceed with an onfarm sale, we will move the entire auction online on May 28th 2020. Videos of the bulls walking will be available on our website closer to sale date so that they can be seen moving in the field. A full catalogue of the Bulls will be available online in May and a physical copy can be sent to you on request. Viewings prior to the sale are welcomed as allowed by government mandates. At this stage we are taking appointments for private viewings throughout May so that you can, if travel permits, have a good look at the bulls in person.
